What are the differences between the Intel i5 and the Intel Pentium B940?

I'm buying a laptop and the Pentium is a lot cheaper but I heard this year's i5 is a lot better. I'm going to school for linguistics, so the speed of the processor isn't hugely important, but I'd still to know where the Pentium stands in comparison to the i5 or i3.
