What's the difference between a parliamentary democracy and a federal republic?

Technically, you can have a parliamentary democracy that is also a federal republic. For example, Canada is a federal republic whose primary legislative body is a democratically elected parliament (so it is both). So, whoever provided the question in the first place (I'm guessing a teacher) fundamentally doesn't understand the concepts.
