Why have Singaporeans always elected the Peoples' Action Party to power in elections since 1959?

I'm an American that's curious why the Peoples' Action Party in recent decades has always won an overwhelming parliamentary majority while the opposition, non-PAP parties have won only two or three elected seats? Is there a certain appeal to the PAP?
